Emden’s Nordseewerke shipyard on the North Sea is at a crossroads. It was recently sold by ThyssenKrupp, signaling an end to the days when newly built ships disembarked from Emden’s docks. But it’s also a new beginning: The site will become a production hub for components used in off-shore wind turbines. The move has raised hopes in Emden, and most shipyard employees – though probably not all of them – will be able to stay on. The year 2010 will be crucial for this city on the North Sea coast.
